Deer Creek Days Art Show

August 5, 2017 @ 9:00 am - 2:00 pm

DEER CREEK DAYS ART SHOW-Amateur /Advanced Amateur
Show Entry Guidelines
Thank you for your interest in this year’s Deer Creek Days Art Show. Our mission is to encourage art in our community and assist artists in promoting their work and improving their practice. The DCD Art Show is now primarily a mentoring show. Given the amount of entries last year and the feedback from entrants, the public and show organizers we have made several revisions. We do this not to drive you to distraction but in an effort to make the show better, more streamlined and more effective for the entrants.

This year our mentoring focus is the self edit. As this year’s artist of the year, Ginny Butcher advises all artists must learn to edit and to always show their best work. This year we ask you focus on quality not quantity. The show is set up to allow everyone to self edit and really focus on the pieces they submit. We hope the new guidelines will encourage you to think outside the box and be creative within the seemingly narrow confines of the guidelines. We wish you the best of luck. Glenrock is a wealth of talented creatives and the DCD Art Show provides the perfect opportunity for us to show that. Remember, when it comes down to it, it supposed to be fun.

PLEASE read the guidelines in full before asking questions. No exceptions to the guidelines will be made.

NUMBER OF ENTRIES—You may enter up to three pieces of art into the 2017 Deer Creek Days art show. That means three pieces across all categories. You may enter any category you like except youth if you are 18 years or older.

FEES— The fees for submission to the show are as follows:
Youth: all categories-FREE up to three entries per person
Amateur: all categories-$5.00 per entry up to three entries per person
Advanced Amateur: all categories-$5.00 per entry up to three entries per person
Professional: $35 for up to three entries (cannot enter any other level)

DATES—All entries must be received at the library by 2PM close of business on Saturday July 8, 2017. Entries will be accepted at the library ONLY from June 29 through July 8.
Your entry should be completely ready for display. Clean glass, unscuffed, split or otherwise damaged frames, matted images and correct hardware are expected. Entries not ready for display will NOT be accepted.

SIZES—There will be no oversized pieces allowed in the amateur and advanced amateur categories. All entrants will receive the opportunity for an equitable amount of space. Here are the minimum and maximum sizes for entry:
Photographic images, paintings, drawings and other 2D entries: minimum (for display purposes)-8 x 10” — maximum 36 x 36” inches
All 3D entries (sculpture, pottery, glass, wood, etc.) no minimum—maximum size 36 x 36”inches

FRAMING—ALL 2D pieces must be framed and have standard hardware attached for hanging and display security. Wire and hook systems only.

AWARDS—Dependent upon the number of entries, ribbons will be given to the first, second and third place winners in each category. Additional prizes and awards will be based on the number of donations and sponsors. Additional prizes, monetary awards or gifts will go to first place winners only.

MENTOR AWARDS/LIBRARY AWARDS—Mentoring awards, an opportunity for an amateur or advanced amateur entrant to receive some one-on-one advice and time with a professional established local artist, are at the individual mentor’s discretion. Mentors choose based solely on the entry, choosing blindly. Library awards are at the discretion of the library staff and also chosen blindly.

JUDGES—This year’s judges are Eric Wimmer Artist and Curator of the Nicolaysen Museum and Clare Marlow owner of Goedicke’s Custom Framing & Art Supply and founder of, and gallerist for, Scarlows Gallery in Casper. A third guest judge may be announced at a later date. All judges decisions are final.

ENTRIES—All entries must be your original work (no kits, collaborative projects or guided arts allowed) and be no more than three years old. No watermarks or signatures on the front of photographic images allowed.

Divisions and entry categories—With the intention of equitable judging, critiquing and mentoring opportunities for all entrants, you can enter up to three entries in the entire show. All three entries do not have to be in the same category or division or level of division (except for professional-all three of their entries MUST be professional). No one entering amateur or advanced amateur can submit an entry at the professional level—PROFESSIONAL LEVEL IS NOW A SEPARATE SHOW AND ONLY MENTIONED HERE FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE.
EX. Suzie is a non professional entrant. She enters mix media-amateur, photography-amateur /figural and painting-advanced amateur/figural.

EX. Bob is a non professional entering for the first time. He enters photography-amateur-abstract, photography-amateur-figural and painting-amateur-abstract.

CHOOSING A LEVEL
Anyone can enter any level. It is encouraged that those who received a first place award in last year’s show at the amateur level consider advanced amateur. Judging like with like is better for both the judges and the artists. As the show gets closer we may hold a framing workshop if there is enough interest to help people frame their work properly. Please let us know if there are other areas of the artistic practice where a workshop would be helpful.

NOTE
The revised Deer Creek Days Art Show is focused on the mentoring process where professional artists mentor newer artists and beginning photographers, allowing them to work their way up the creative ladder. The new separate professional show is to allow the mentors and other professionals to demonstrate to newer artists the mechanics of a professional art show reflecting standard fees, commissions and guidelines. It is also an opportunity for regional artists to sell their work and promote their practice. We are not focused on ribbons and places. We are focused on creating and promoting great art. Please join us in making this year’s show the best one yet.

PROFESSIONAL DIVISION—printed here for convenience. Please note professional level is now a SEPARATE SHOW.
Up to three paintings for juried selection. $35 for the first painting and $10 for each additional painting. The fees are non refundable. This show offers a $500 Best in Show cash award and entries will be capped at 30 artists. At least one piece will be picked for the show from each artist this first year. All pieces must be available for sale with a standard 70% artist /30% show split. Professionals may also donate pieces for the art reception’s silent auction which will also be a 70%/30% split. Please meet with organizers during submissions week to discuss your donations. We cannot store paintings in advanced of submissions week. Please consider the commission fee when pricing your artworks.

Professional artists will enter the Glenrock Regional Art Show and Sale (G.R.A.S.S.)* this year. Those entering this show are automatically disqualified from entering the Deer Creek Days amateur/advanced amateur show. By having a separate professional level show, we hope to encourage more of the many professional Wyoming artists to take part in this event while creating an art event that helps put Glenrock on the map. GRASS hopes to reflect the very best our region has to offer in terms of art.
There are no categories for the professional show. Select your best work.
